Best 35/12.50 r20 Tires

Today a few different tires will be battling it out for the best 35/12.50 r20 tires. There’s a lot that goes into a truly great tire, especially when it comes to off-roading. While the key-factor for off-roading is the tire pattern, we’ll be talking about a lot more than just patterns!

Let’s go through a rev for rev analysis of the competitors and see what we can come up with.

Radar Renegade R7 Mud Terrain Radial Tire (35/12.50 r20)

Now straight away, we see the sort of pleasingly tribal and rugged pattern. It’s not all about looks though, because the pattern is aggressive and is great for traction on multiple terrains and to say the cornering performance isn’t too shabby, well that’s an understatement. When we consider it also brings anti-aquaplaning technology with a “Superior” level of damage resistance it seems like this one has a chance of staying king of the hill throughout. But the tire we know is by no means better than the one we don’t… Well not yet anyway.

There are some concerns about the un-vulcanised material between the treads, but other than that this tire definitely seems to be a strong competitor on the market and to top it off, this is a bargain for the price involved.

Nitto Traill Grappler M/T (35×12 50r20)

Although this one may look less appealing than the lovable renegade above this tire does seem at first glance to enjoy more functionality than the R7. Looks can be deceiving however. The Grappler does enjoy more “biting edges”. The neat stone ejector design helps against the usual accelerated wear and tear that you’ll know all too well if you’re brave enough to take your baby to a quarry.

  • Tapered groove-tread for those additional biting edges
  • Anti-Hydroplane technologies


In short, the super soft compound makes it a little difficult to bear heavy loads. Stories of tearing chunks of the compound when moving heavy loads have been floating around. But for off-roading, the only time this could be concerning is for “Quarriors” where a soft compound could leave you needing not-so-roadside assistance.

Firestone Destination MT (35 12 50 r20)

The Firestone brand tends to speak for itself a lot of the time. Internationally recognised for its on-road and off-road tires, these guys bring the heat; at least their tires absorb a lot of it. This tire brings something that Firestone designed and it’s certainly makes this tire seem like a good get.


  • Firestone’s own “Dura-Loc 3.0”, which in normal speak, means they pimped out the internal structure to create a more durable tire inside, and out
  • Pinned for studs. We’ll talk about why below
  • Extraction Traction. An “essential” for all-terrain tires, meaning they’re effective at getting out of ruts and mud. Always handy folks.


Needing studs as there are no built-in sipes into the design could be a little bit of a turn-off, and with a bad reputation in heavier rain conditions, it may not be exactly the right tire for you. It’s a situational piece where slippery conditions may merit a different choice, but a quarry would definitely suit these bad boys.

BFGoodrich Mud-Terrain T/A KM2 (35/12.50 r20)

This seems to be the bigger and better tire at damage resistance so far. With it comes a higher price tag than the others. That may be daunting when you consider how much your tires already cost. But ask yourself, is the extra money now going to save you buying new tires for 3 times as long as you currently do? Let’s look at the pros and see!


  • Very strong damage resistance, especially for off-road hazards
  • Linear flex zones to give that extra “give and grab” that makes these tires quite possibly worth the money.
  • Computer optimised tread for less noise on the road.


The two issues here at that it’s an expensive tire compared to some of the others here and it doesn’t agree with ice. This could land you in a dangerous position.

Toyo Tire Open Country (35/12.50 r20)

This is a tire of few words, so let’s get down to it. Deep siping is definitely a good thing to have for those living in icy conditions. That along with an aggressive tread pattern and scalloped shoulder blocks make this tire seem like a winner.


  • Good on mud, ice and snow
  • Quiet on-road
  • Aggressive tread design with hook shaped blocks


Here we have our most controversial entry, with a recall of a decent quantity of them being public knowledge. Since then, I don’t think the reputation of this product has bounced back yet.
